SKR V1.3 Setup Guide

SKR V1.3 Setup guide for installing the mainboard from BIGTREE-TECH. A Step by step approach making the installation for the SKR V1.3 nice and easy.

Hardware Installation

The installation of this board into an existing setup is very easy. Some re-wiring may be need on end-stops, stepper motor wiring, and the connection for the BLTOUCH probe. That, however, can be expected when swapping to any new build and whilst may sound daunting, it isn’t really. Quite often it is a case of pushing the metal pins down, pulling out the cable and swapping the wires around. This depends on how the connections were wired on the previous 3D printer board.

Jumper Configuration

Now on this occasion we are going to be setting up the SKR V1.2 / V1.3 for UART mode with TMC2208’s, the board itself is extremely easy to setup and takes no real time at all. However I will break it down to make it easy to follow along.

  1. Remove the black jumpers from the stepper motors pins.
  2. Move the red jumpers from the right to below the stepper motor pins. These are marked as XUART, YUART, ZUART, E0UART, and E1UART and have red bases.
  3. Ignoring the very bottom red pin in the picture your SKR V1.3 board should now resemble the picture above.

Soldering the TMC2208 V2.1 or lower

In order to setup UART mode on the TMC2208 drivers themselves we need to enable the feature. It requires a light bit of soldering of two contacts as circled above and is a quick job. Time your time there is no rush.

If the TMC2208 driver you are using are version 3 from BIGTREE-TECH then skip the soldering part it is already done for you.

Stepper Motor Placement

Important – This is for TMC2208’s Only please double check your stepper motors orientation before placing them on the board.

Now insert the stepper drivers into their positions ensuring they are orientated with the potentiometer facing leftwards towards where the power, heated bed and extruders will be wired into.

TMC2208 stepper drivers run particularly hot, so we need to keep them cool. Heatsinks placed on the stepper drivers help a little with this. Although active fan cooling is fundamental in running them cool. Fix your heatsinks as central as possible to the gold section on top of the TMC2208 ensuring that the heatsink is not contacting with any of the soldered pins on the driver itself.

LCD Installation

Connecting your LCD screen is another simple step on the hardware installation. Depending on which LCD screen you are using, you will either connect the ribbon wires to EXP1 or EXP1 and EXP2 and match them to the same connection names on the SKR V1.3.

If when powering up the SKR V1.3 you do not see any information, try rotating the cables or switching them around. For those who’s previously had to plug in the LCD upside down, chances are you will need to turn them back around to the correct way. BIGTREE-TECH has wired the SKR V1.3 correctly so no need to invert the cables.

TFT35 Touch Screen Installation

A very simple installation, one end of the cable can only fit into the TFT one way. Opposing end sits in line order with reset button (The one loose connector) to the far right or from the angle of the picture above the far left.

Just encase the cable changes in the future or you are using a custom cable then the pin layout is as follows.

There seems to be some confusion caused by the layout of the SLR V1.3 schematics seemingly not tying together with what is actually printed on the TFT35 V1.2 board.

There is shouldn’t be a need to change orientation of the cables unless the pins have been reassigned in the firmware. It should be noted that the very latest version Marlin V2 beta firmware should be used. Seemingly, even less than 24 hours can make a huge difference between something working and not working.

With the many requests to clarify the wiring positioning, I deemed it prudent to create a new cable with individual colours to assist better. Hoping it helps.

BLTouch Installation

Now when it comes to wiring in your BLTouch the wiring is slightly changed when it comes too connecting with the board. It is not just in a straight line coming from the probe. It is a little jumbled up. Nevertheless its an easy process, just follow the colour of your cables from your BLTouch and switch them around when you plug them into the SKR V1.3. You may need to change the pins on the end of your cable, but its relatively easy if not simply monotonous at times.

I have listed the order below from left to right. Left being nearest to your power supply connection on the board.


Next the black and white cables need from the BLTouch need to be inserted in the Z_MIN socket on the SKR V1.3 board.
